The Animals are Comin’

The Animals are Comin'

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Eugene Gleemen’s 90th Season! The group was formed on January 14, 1926 and rehearsals begin the next Tuesday making the Gleemen one of Eugene’s first community arts groups and one of the oldest men’s choirs on the west coast.

We are proud to be still going strong. In fact, in the last few years we have picked up the pace a bit. We have attracted several younger members, received Oregon Cultural Trust funding to purchase a substantial number of new arrangements for our library, now offer free holiday performances to retirement centers and nursing homes, and have started a series of impromptu concerts at local pubs in the summertime.

We invite you to share in the excitement by attending our major concerts this season:

  • The Animals are Comin’ Sunday, November 22 at 3:00 at the Unitarian Church
  • Annual Sweetheart’s Ball, Saturday, February 13, 6:00 at the Eugene Hilton
  • American Spirituals, Sunday, May 22 at 3:00 at the Unitarian Church

Of course, if you feel like singing come on down and join us on Tuesday nights at the First Christian Church! It’s a welcoming environment and singing provides so many benefits to singers and audience alike.

For the Sheer Joy of Singing,

Dr. John Jantzi , Music Director

TBT – The Gleemen Sing Opera (2010)

Eugene Gleemen in FaustWhat do you do when the choral director says, “I need eight guys immediately to fill some roles in the upcoming Eugene Opera production of Faust!”

Respond, “No problem boss, and pass the eye-shadow”.

To say there is a difference between standing on risers wearing a tux and singing from sheet music … and having to memorize your lines in another language (French – mon Dieu!), act, learn staging, costumes and makeup is a massive understatement!

Still, we seemed to have survived and while some of the Gleemen who participated swore never to grace the Hult Center stage again, others were bitten by the Opera bug and have been regular members of the Eugene Opera chorus.

All together now…

Gloire immortelle
de nos aïeux,
sois-nous fidèle,
mourons comme eux!
et sous ton aile,
soldats vainqueurs,
dirige nos pas, enflamme nos cœurs!

Christmas CarolingThe Holiday Season has finally arrived and the Gleemen have one of their busiest schedules ever with 11 performances in the next 18 days!

We start with a couple performances of our Christmas program, first at the LDS Creche on Friday night December 5th, followed by a guest appearance at the Greater Eugene Chorus’ Christmas concert on December 6th.  You may remember this fabulous women’s chorus who appeared as a guest in our Christmas concert last year, and we are more than happy to return the favor.

Christmas CarolingNext, Christmas caroling is in full swing for us as we travel to eight retirement and assisted living facilities in the Eugene/Springfield area to share the joy of Christmas.  We love giving back to the community, and Christmas caroling is by far one of the most rewarding activities we do.

Finally, we close out the year with the Gleemen Ensemble performing at a luncheon for NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association) on December 22nd.

The Eugene Gleemen wish all of our fans, performers and supporters a safe and happy holiday season, and if we don’t see you at one of the events above, look forward to catching up with you again in the new year.

Eugene Gleemen Recipient of OCF Grant

Oregon Community FoundationThe Eugene Gleemen are pleased to announce their receipt of a grant from the Fred W. Fields Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation for the purchase of new sheet music.

Over the nearly 90 years of our existence we have built a large and eclectic music library.  Unfortunately, as time passes so does the quality of many of these pieces and it is not unusual for us to reuse music that has been performed by the Gleemen for 50, 60 or 70 years.  This grant from the OCF will allow us to not only replenish our stock of favorite arrangements, but also purchase new and more challenging pieces from our favorite composers like Mark Hayes.

Thanks again to the Oregon Community Foundation for awarding the Eugene Gleemen this grant, the benefits will be coming soon in upcoming concerts.

Still Young at 89

gleespring2010_30Tuesday, September 9th marks the start of the 90th Season for the Eugene Gleemen, the West (Best) Coast’s longest continuously performing chorus.  While many other choral groups take the summer off, the Gleemen had a very busy schedule with appearances at the Lane County Fair, the Eugene Emeralds, the Eugene Celebration, Hop Valley Brewing, and I’m told some impromptu “flash mob” appearances at other local drinking establishments!

John, Paul, Ringo ... say what???We love being able to perform in the Eugene/Springfield area and the outstanding support received from out local community.  This year the Gleemen will be continuing their “Gleemen Grant” program which awards funds to local, young choral groups to support their activities, a critical source of funding for them in a time when school budgets continue to be cut.

I've Been Working on the Railroad...One thing we can’t get enough of is new members!  We welcome male singers from any musical background who want to experience, “the Sheer Joy of Singing!”.  There is no audition needed, you don’t need to be able to read music, just want to have fun in a choral setting with a diverse group of singers from 18 to 88, and all walks of life.

Rehearsals are every Tuesday night at 7:00 PM, starting September 9th in the Grace Chapel at First Christian Church, 1166 Oak St, Eugene.  Come sing with us – we’d love to see you there!

For more information, click the “Join” link at the top of the page, watch our  YouTube video, and read the New Member Orientation Guide.
